So, quick weekend recap... I drove to my parents' house on Friday. When I got there, no one was home (my parents were on vacation) except my brother's dog (who was really happy to see me). So I went up to the American Legion Post, which was where the wedding shower was being held the next day. Sure enough, all my friends were there decorating. Actually, they were just about finished. I had a great time hanging out with my homegirls. Apparently, there's some man going around my hometown breaking into houses and scaring or grabbing people. He hasn't done anything super violent, but it's still creepy, especially since my town is one where people don't lock their doors. Everyone thinks I'm from the big city because I lock my car doors when it's sitting in the driveway! So I was thinking about that, and the shower the next day, and probably a little bit about the Blair Witch, and I didn't sleep at all Friday night. I slept for maybe an hour total. Very frustrating. Turns out I wasn't the only one - none of us slept very well! I went over to pick up Gretchen (the bride-to-be) and head up to the Legion so we could get all the food ready. Gretchen only had one shower because she lives out of town and could only come home once before the wedding. So there were almost 60 people there, from her family and her fiancé's family. I somehow got elected to be the master of ceremonies (I told everyone it's because I'm the bossiest). I went around to each table and told them to go ahead and get some food from the buffet we had set up. After everyone was done eating, I had to stand up and thank everyone for coming, and for all the help and support they had given the bride and groom over the years. Then we went around the room and quickly introduced ourselves since the two sides hadn't met all that often before. Then Gretchen started opening her presents. This took FOREVER! Not for nothing, but she had a lot of freaking gifts! But she had complained earlier that she felt rushed, and for various reasons this wedding planning has been really stressful for her, so we didn't want to stress her out further. So we just went with it. The thing that was stressful for me was that almost immediately, all the guests started chitchatting amongst themselves. And not quietly. When she was on maybe her 3rd gift, I think only about 5 people were actually watching her. I know it made me feel like people were bored, and since we, the bridesmaids were putting on the shower, it was my fault and I needed to do something. It didn't help that all of the bride's mother's friends were sitting at the closest table, and they kept pulling one of us aside and telling us to do this or do that. Between making the ribbon bouquets, writing down who gave what, carting the gifts over from the gift table and taking care of the wrapping paper etc., I was literally sweating. Not to say that I was doing all this myself - there are 6 bridesmaids and we were all working out butts off. But it was a very stressful situation. Don't even get me started on the coffee debacle. Suffice to say, there wasn't any and people were pissed. Despite all that, I think Gretchen had a good time and she got to see her family and her fiancé's family, and she also got some great gifts. I don't think she was as stressed out as the rest of us, or at least I hope not. Once the shower was over, and we had cleaned up and transported all the gifts to Gretchen's mom's house, I took a nap! Later, I went to a party and then we ended up at the town fair in the beer tent. It was hot and crowded and I went home early. But I had a good time hanging out with my friend Brenda and her boyfriend, and various people from high school. Sunday I finally slept in, which I haven't done in about 2 weeks. It was heavenly. Then Mom and I went to the mall to buy my brother's birthday presents, came home, had dinner and drove back to Syracuse. It was good to see Jim and my cats! |
Warning: clicking on these links will launch a new browser window. In all the brouhaha over Eyes Wide Shut being digitally changed to secure an R rating, there are smaller stories that might have been missed. This is an interesting one about how the MPAA views women's sexuality. You know how every once in a while you hear about funny things being auctioned off on Ebay? This site collects them. Speaking of auctions, this site can search all of the popular online auctions at once. Pretty handy! There was a shooting at a Jewish Community Center, wounding three children and two adults. The suspect is still at large. William Shatner's wife has died, apparently from drowning. Add Shannen Doherty to the list of women in Hollywood who are WAAY too thin. Remember when she was on 90210 and looked healthy? If we're lucky, they'll archive it! Carnie Wilson is undergoing a gastric bypass live on the internet. Um, yuck? I really dig Mothers Who Thing on Salon. I know I'm not a mother. It's still consistently really good writing. Speaking of mothers, Gwen has a new diary entry up. She kills me. |
