So Mary and I went over to Molly's new house last night. Well, it's new to her. It's only a year old though. I am so jealous. Her house is so nice. And she has a yard! A deck! A dishwasher! A basement! A garage! These are all things that I covet. It was nice to see the girls. We watched the Real World, which was really boring. The new summary is up, by the way. So I went into my internship today, because the company I'm working for is thinking about getting branded e-mail. They are an association, and they think that maybe their members would appreciate being able to have a central, web-based e-mail address that identifies their work affiliation. Sorry to be so vague, but because of what I'm about to say, I don't want to be any more specific! So they contacted a company which offers web-based e-mail, like I would be able to offer someone@fresh-hell.com. The point being, people will need to come to your site to check their e-mail. Which will increase traffic to your site. Which, if you sell advertising, as they are planning to do, will increase revenue. So a sales guy came out to do a presentation. When we asked really specific questions, he mostly answered, "That's a good question. I'll have to check and get back to you." And then they offer a kind of web-based Lotus Notes thing, where you can have a group calendar, task list, contact list etc., and everyone can contact one another to set up meetings and such. This is all well and good, but they didn't have that much additional functionality, and they were charging like $25K! I actually asked him, "What kind of options do you offer that would make your service so much better than, say, Yahoo! Clubs?" and he had no idea. Yahoo! Clubs is free. So either he needs more training or they need to work on their product. I must say, it felt pretty good to be in on that meeting. I haven't been in a business setting where I have to work with vendors and go to meetings in quite some time, and I slipped right back into my role of "tech savvy inquiry girl" quite readily. I was afraid I was out of practice. I was thinking about the plusses and minuses of working from home. The plusses are:
And the minuses:
The biggest problem is that since Jim works full-time and I don't, I'm responsible for house cleaning. And I hate to clean house. So I don't. Instead, I sit here and feel guilty about how dirty the house is and think, "Man, I should do some dishes or something. Maybe I'll just check Fametracker one last time. Oh my God, Jim's home! Quick, to the shower!" Yeah, I know you all feel so bad for me. |
Warning: clicking on these links will launch a new browser window. This is kind of neat link, in a "send around the office, discuss at the water cooler" kind of way. Remember when I went to BalloonFest? And the Spin Doctors cancelled their show because the singer was having problems? Turns out he has vocal cord paralysis and may never sing again! I really dig the new Levi's ad with the invisible people having sex. Have you seen it? It's pretty cool. Playstations are dropping to $99. This is good because Jim needs a new one. Of all the recent Brunching Shuttlecock's ratings, I like dairy products the best. USAToday is right on top of things - yesterday's story was "Web buzz helped Blair Witch". You think? Hey, I got mentioned in Yahoo! Daily Net Buzz again! And not only hits for me, but also for Bust, Hissyfit and Tomato Nation. Yay! While I'm not always amused by those eBay hoax auctions, this one is pretty funny. At least I hope it's a hoax. How is Roger Ebert qualified to write a column about the Web? If I had ever been in a sorority, I think this would really annoy me. This is a revealing look at the life of a realtor. OK, my mom is coming to visit tomorrow and I have to go clean up! |
