I want to thank Kymm (as in The Mighty Kymm) for letting me know about all of the horrible mistakes I've been making. Bad links, no links, forgetting to upload images and such. I would MUCH rather someone e-mail me and let me know when that happens, then to just let it sit there on the server. I don't generally check my entries after uploading them, especially when I'm in a hurry. So, thanks Kymm! I do appreciate it. My mom drove out today to take me shopping for my birthday. It's not until September (the 19th, to be precise), but she's going on vacation in a week and then school starts for her so she didn't think she'd have the opportunity to come out unless she came today. First, we went down to Armory Square, which is a little shopping/restaurant district downtown. Actually, since the last time I've been down there just to wander around, it's become much more restaurant and much less shopping. We went in a few stores, but there just wasn't much to look at. I think part of the problem is that most of the stores are only open 10-6 during the week and even less on weekends. Most people only have the opportunity to go downtown on weeknights or weekends. So you can see why a lot of these little shops close down. They also don't do much advertising. I think they have an association for the Square as a whole, and if they banded together they could probably do some promotion for pretty cheap. Hey, maybe they need a marketing director! Like I need a full time job right now. But I do have ideas about how they could promote it. It is a pretty cool area, and unique in Syracuse. Anyway, we ate an early lunch because we were both starving. Then we headed for the mall. My mom really wanted to buy me clothes. I think she thinks I dress funny! I kind of do. Anyway, we went to a bunch of stores. I kind of wanted to get a twin set, but I couldn't find one I liked. We also picked up Jim's birthday presents (can't tell you b/c he reads this!). Finally I found a shirt I liked at Old Navy. Then I bought a new purse at Limited. It's pretty cool - it's black and kind of a microfiber thing so it looks very sleek and futuristic. I don't generally carry a purse, but I'm sick of carrying my wallet around so I need to start. Then we went to Borders and I bought myself a Perl/CGI book because I'm a geek like that. We also had smoothies from the cafe. Unfortunately, they didn't have raspberry, which is my favorite, so I had strawberry. Still pretty good though. I remember when the cafe dept at corporate was testing different recipes to figure out which one to buy for all the stores - I was a willing guinea pig! I also love the Border Chai. It's nothing like real Chai - it's very sweetened. So if you like real Chai, you probably wouldn't like it. But if you like very sweet drinks, or drink a lot of soda, or put a lot of sugar in your coffee, you would like it. It's funny how many people I used to work with at the store last summer are still there. I thought I would go in and not know anyone. I think all the people who have been there for a year or more just end up working weekdays. Normally I go in on weekends, so I don't see them. It's still hard for me to be there and not answer the phone or help customers. Somehow I manage. So, a good day. It was great to spend time with my mom. We were talking about how, since my dad has retired, his favorite thing is to hang out in the front yard and watch the cars go by. She said she looked out the window the other day and he was sitting out there with a straw hat on! She's not sure where he got it, but it cracked me up. My dad's father was a farmer, and I think he is turning into him! I just picture my dad's big head with a straw hat and I giggle. |

Are you a single woman looking for a single (possibly wealthy) man? Try Silicon Valley. Bob Odenkirk (half of "Mr Show") has signed a deal with HBO. Some scoop from Joss Whedon on the new show "Angel" and the future of "Buffy" Tips on becoming a professional musician from Dave Navarro and EW. Iridium filed for bankruptcy. I remember one of my professors last fall telling us that Iridium was a great company and we should all buy stock. Oops! I've been predicting that Alec Baldwin is going to run for office since he did a fantastic job on Politically Incorrect a few years back. Also: see Robert Downey Jr. described as "sobriety-challenged". If I had acted like the daughter in this story, my parents would have disowned me. And they wouldn't have bailed me out. And I think I'm a better person for it. The BEST episode of Friends was on last night - the official title is "The One With The Embryos" but I like to call it the Game Show episode. It's the one where Chandler and Joey play a game against Monica and Rachel to see who knows more about the others, and the boys win the girls' apartment. Hilarious. Read the script here. |
