Anyway, I was up way too late working on that and the new Real World Summary. I got up today and called my contact at the association to find out what the game plan was. See, the schedule was to tell our testers to check out the test version of the site from Friday through Monday. Then I would get all the feedback/changes on end of day Monday and make revisions so that we could go live Wednesday. I didn't hear anything on Monday and I should have called. I called yesterday and left a message, and my contact called me back today. So now I have a bunch of changes to make before we can go live. Plus one of my forms isn't working. I hate Perl. I'll just be glad when this whole thing is over. It's been a great experience, both in learning web stuff and learning how to deal with a client when you are working offsite. But there have been frustrations as well, and I'm sure they have had some too. I have to go in to the office on Friday and I'm hoping that will be the end of it, if I write up the documentation well enough. I don't mind if they call with questions (although I need to put in writing some limits there or I might be getting calls until 2002), but I just don't want to have to THINK about this project anymore. I want to get on to the fun stuff like the supergush redesign and my own site's redesign! I think part of my problem has been that I just started doing HTML in January. I dabbled a bit here and there before that, but nothing serious until January. And even then I was using a WYSIWIG editor for a lot of stuff. It wasn't until I took a class this summer (AFTER I had started my internship) that I started hand-coding. Let me tell you, if you use a WYSIWYG editor, and think you know HTML, you don't. It's kind of like being able to read a foreign language well enough to get the gist of a story vs. being able to speak and write fluently in a foreign language. Anyway, I have learned a lot this summer, and every time I learned something new, I would feel obligated to go back and change the site around to fit that new concept. So I spent a lot of time undoing what I had previously spent a lot of time doing, if that makes sense. Whew! It's almost over though. I guess I should just go write up my documentation and make sure to include my whopping tech support hourly rate. Any of you readers who are web designers/developers who have any thoughts on the above, positive or negative, I would love to hear them. If I can't take criticism, should I get out now? Are things different when you are in the "real world"? |
Warning: clicking on these links will launch a new browser window. A usability weblog called Webword. Some good links there. Two of the five members of Oasis have quit the band. They're working on a new album - have they put out an album in like 3 years? Transmitting data via power lines? It sounds too good to be true. I'm no scientist though, so I have no clue. But it seems like if it would work, someone would have already thought of it. Is there a laziness gene? If so, I definitely have it. An interesting story on the making of Blair Witch. Spoilers abound. Ali Landry (the Doritos girl) - not much brain power there. I'm always interesting in fashion tips, even if I mostly wear jeans and t-shirts.
